Rates for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy

New users of the NMR laboratory are required to engage in hands-on orientation to facility operations (e.g., laboratory access, scheduling, general use of equipment, housekeeping, etc.) and safety protocols. Orientation is important to creating a safe and efficient work environment for all users.

Our staff are available to provide consultation or training at no cost for an initial one-hour period on each research project. After the first hour, the following per-hour charges will apply and be charged in 30-minute increments. Consultation is available to our academic customers to aid with proposal or method development. Training to supplement prior experience (e.g., coursework or external training seminars) is available to ensure that users are qualified. A&TS staff will provide training and are solely authorized to determine whether an individual has attained sufficient proficiency to operate in the lab independently of A&TS staff.

Rates

Analytical costs for NMR are charged on a per-instrument hour basis for all unknowns, standards, blanks, checks, and replicates required to provide high-quality publishable data. This charge basis helps recover costs for analyzing small numbers of samples, methods involving large numbers of analytes, consumables (e.g., gases, reference standards), data reduction time, and instrument service and maintenance.

Research projects will be charged for both instrument and analyst using an hourly rate. Analyses run by a qualified user will be charged for instrument time only. Analyst charges apply for actual time spent on instrument setup/operation, method development, interpretation, data analysis and/or reporting and are in addition instrument charges. Instrument-hour is based on total usage which includes setup, calibration, QA/QC, instrument operation and data processing. There is a minimum billable increment of 15 minutes; hourly rates will be billed in 15-minute increments.

Sample preparation and all related expenses (NMR tubes, solvents, disposal, shipping, etc.) are the responsibility of the PI. Sample disposal is the responsibility of the PI. A&TS reserves the right to charge $50 per sample for disposal of samples that are not removed by the PI. Return shipping of samples will be provided at cost +10% administrative fee. Charges will be assessed to the PI for repair to, or replacement of, equipment damaged due to negligence on the part of a user.

Rates are effective 1/1/2024 and are subject to change. Please confirm rates with A&TS staff prior to submitting proposal budgets. A&TS will honor previously published rates for existing projects for the remainder of the project duration, or for six months from the date of publication of new rates, whichever occurs first.

Discount Options:

The hourly charges for the analyst may be waived if the analyses are performed by a qualified user. Collaborative projects will be charged at 75% of the normal instrument rate if the PI researcher agrees to collaborate with A&TS and includes co-authorship on derivative publications.
